When tooth decay forms in an area of chipped or otherwise compromised tooth enamel, it will gradually start to spread. Inconsistencies in your oral hygiene regimen or procrastinating your bi-annual dental exam and cleaning at Dr. Lara Perry’s Seguin, Texas office, can accelerate the decay process.

In time the cavity could grow too large for Dr. Lara Perry to viably treat the tooth with a standard filling. A tooth in this dire condition might need to have the entire tooth enamel layer restored by a crown.

This will replace the entire tooth enamel layer with an alternate material such as a metallic alloy, dental-grade porcelain, or gold. Since these materials are impervious to future tooth decay, helping to maintain the tooth’s presence in your mouth for many years to come.

After examining the tooth Dr. Lara Perry will use a drill to remove the entirety of the tooth enamel. The anchoring abutment and surrounding teeth will then be cast in a detailed impression, which will be sent to a dental lab where the crown will be created.

Dr. Lara Perry will then secure a temporary crown, over the abutment. This hard-plastic cap does not restore the full function of the tooth. It is only meant to protect the abutment while the dental lab does their work.

When the crown is ready, you’ll need to return for a second appointment This will be brief as Dr. Lara Perry simply needs to remove the temporary crown before using a strong dental adhesive to secure the crown in place.
