Root canals are treatments designed to protect your teeth after the pulp of a tooth has been damaged due to an injury or infection. The pulp is a soft tissue inside a tooth that contains the life force of the tooth, including the nerves, connective tissues, and blood vessels. If it becomes diseased or infected, it must be removed and the tooth must be sealed or the tooth may have to be removed. Here are some common reasons a root canal might be needed:
– On the outside of a tooth is the tooth enamel, a thin layer that helps protect the inner workings of a tooth. The tooth enamel can be damaged, and your root can be exposed to infections or decay, thus prompting the need for a root canal.
– Constant wear and tear on teeth due to multiple procedures can weaken tooth enamel and expose a tooth, at which point a root canal is needed if the pulp becomes damaged.
– The pulp of a tooth can be damaged by an oral accident or injury.
– The pulp of a tooth could be damaged or infected by bacteria.
